The UHCC System of seven community colleges has been building a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and data-based decision-making for over a decade but especially since joining the Achieving the Dream initiative in 2006. UHCC has adopted this culture of change in order to strengthen its student success agenda through:

  1. funded faculty-driven innovation committees;
  2. campus strategic performance numbers recently renewed in the UHCC 2015-2021 Strategic Directions PDF icon; and
  3. performance funding.

In order to prioritize these strategies and implement them consistently throughout the community college system, in Fall 2014, the UHCC system established the Student Success Council (SSC) PDF icon. Composed of representatives from faculty, administration, institutional research, Banner, P/20, the SSC has identified four focus areas to increase student success:

  1. Developmental Education: The UHCC system has launched a large scale approach to accelerate students through college level math and English. National data through such organizations as Complete College America consistently show that incorporating the Co-Requisite model, rather than the pre-requisite model, results in many more students successfully passing gatekeeper courses.
  2. College Pathways: Through the online STAR system, implemented at every UH campus, students can see what his or her progress is within a certain pathway or major. As a result, STAR shows the student what his or her course selections should be in the upcoming semester. STAR serves as the official registration tool.
  3. Just in Time Support: UHCC students face many challenges. Providing just in time, customized support for non-cognitive issues will minimize stress and allow students to focus on academic success.
  4. Graduation and Transfer: Graduation and transfer must remain as a focus of the SSC, for degrees, both associate and baccalaureate degrees, help students in their quest to find living wage careers.

In AY 2014-15, the SSC focused on the redesigning the developmental education structure. The following tasks were completed:
