Co-requisite Remediation for English and Math Pathways
In Hawaiʻi and across the nation, a large number of students are deemed unprepared for transfer-level math and English courses. Thousands of students in Hawaiʻi begin college in remediation, which cost money and time toward a degree. For many of our students, remediation will be their first and last college experience. Something had to change. So, in 2015, committees were formed to assess the possibility of developing a co-requisite support for Math and English college level courses, as part of the UHCCʻs Math and English Redesign initiative.
In 2016, the committees presented new math models for non-algebra, algebra, STAT and CTE paths with co-requisite support for college-level math. While the Math faculty members were working on their new math models, the English faculty members across the system were also working on new models with co-requisite support. The English Adhoc Committee came up with several recommendations , which were approved by the Student Success Council in 2016. The new pathways were launched in Fall 2016.
