Zero Costs for Textbooks

tex tbooks

The rising cost of textbooks is becoming a major barrier to student success. In some cases, the books are so expensive that students can't afford to buy it, resulting in poor grades and/or incompletion of classes.

A Leeward CC student survey conducted in Spring 2015 discovered that 41% of the student respondents felt they performed poorly without the textbooks. 52% said that textbook costs affect whether or not they stay in school. And, 28% have withdrawn from a class because of textbook costs.

In order to eliminate this major "cost" barrier to higher education, the UH community colleges are embarking on a bold movement to adopt the implementation of Open Educational Resources (OER) to replace most textbooks by the year 2021. In Fall 2015, Leeward Community College was the first campus to offer zero cost textbooks. Soon after, Honolulu and Kapiʻolani Community Colleges joined the movement.
