Serving the Big Island

The University of Hawai’i Community College System is committed to serving all segments of the Hawai’i Island community by building modern, distributed learning environments at Hawai’i Community College that serves the entire Big island. This new approach relies less on a destination campus, and instead focuses on smaller hubs for students to learn in person and through other distributive delivery methods using technology and local centers. This island-wide learning model is projected to serve 4,000 FTE students. The main campus in Hilo will continue to serve East Hawai’i (approximately 2,000 FTE) by leveraging shared facilities at UH Hilo, such as the library, student center, bookstore, dormitories, and the automobile facilities on the UH Hilo campus. With a branch campus in West Hawai’i (Hawai’i Community College – Palamanui) and satellite centers serving rural North and South areas of the Big Island, there is less need for a large campus in Hilo.
