Public and Human Services is a broad career pathway. Administration of Justice
The Administration of Justice program provides general academic knowledge, concepts and theory pertaining to the criminal justice system; meets the pre-service needs for careers in law enforcement, private security, courts or other fields related to administration of justice; and meets various in-service educational and training needs of professionals in the administration of justice field.

Adult Residential Care Home Operator
The Adult Residential Care Home Operator program prepares you to care for patients in a skilled long-term care facility, home care, or hospital care settings. You will learn about diseases, preparation of special diets, following through with existing therapies and behavioral management. You will also learn the rules and regulations established by the State of Hawai’i Department of Health.

Applied Forensic Anthropology
Identifying human remains and assisting in the detection of a crime are major job responsibilities of a forensic anthropologist. The Certificate in Forensic Anthropology is a joint program offered by Leeward Community College and the University of Hawai’i – West  O’ahu. This program prepares you for a variety of job opportunities, including crime scene analyst, forensic anthropologists, forensic scientist, and crime lab technicians.

Asian Studies
This academic subject certificate introduces students to non-American cultures and is designed for students interested in further sociology and Eastern cultural studies.

Cosmetology
The Cosmetology program is part of an international member school system that teaches the technique known as Pivot Point, a training method that revolutionized hair and beauty education. This training offers you the highest degree of manipulative skills and theory that meet the standards and requirements of the State Board of Cosmetology and prepare you for a career in the world of hair and beauty. This knowledge and ability is achieved first through lecture and demonstration, followed by actual work in a salon setting. The Cosmetology program prepares you for the State Board of Cosmetology Examination. Upon passing the examination, you will become a licensed cosmetologist.

Early Childhood Education
Early Childhood Education is a field with many employment opportunities. The certificate programs allow you to enter the field usually at the assistant level, preparing you for employment as a child care worker, family child care provider, nanny, home visitor, parent educator, special education assistant or supervisor, and director of private early childhood programs. The Associate in Science degree program prepares you for immediate employment as teachers in private early childhood programs for infants and toddlers or preschoolers. This program meets the requirement for employment as a teacher, lead caregiver, teacher-director, or director of a private preschool in programs licensed by the State Department of Human Services, and prepares you for further education at a four-year university.

Want to become a teacher? Pre-education programs at the community colleges prepare you either for employment as an educational assistant or for transfer to a baccalaureate teacher education program degree programs at four-year universities. Get a jumpstart studying to become a teacher with pre-professional courses and field experiences at the UH Community Colleges.

Education Assistant in Special Education
As a special education assistant, you will be working with special needs youth in primary and secondary education. This program will help you identify characteristics of selected disabilities and the particular needs experienced by these disabilities. You’ll learn best practices and strategies used for each area of disability.

Educational Interpreting
Over four semesters and one summer intensive, you will learn to become interpreters for the State of Hawai‘i Department of Education to work with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing in K-12 classrooms. Graduates of this program will be able to effectively interpret in American Sign Language, English, and contact varieties of signed English for educational and related settings.

Educational Paraprofessionals
This program prepares you for employment with the State of Hawaii Department of Education as a paraprofessional working with individuals with special needs. An Associate in Science degree is available, with two areas of specialization: paraprofessionals working with deaf and hard of hearing students or with special education students. The program also offers a Certificate of Completion for paraprofessionals working with deaf and hard of hearing students.

Fire and Environmental  Emergency Response
The Fire and Environmental Emergency Response program is designed to prepare you academically for the Fire Service field in such careers as an insurance adjuster, investigator, safety and building inspector, as well as a firefighter.

Food Service - Culinary Arts, Baking and Patisserie
If you’re interested in becoming a chef, baker or pastry chef, then the culinary arts program at the community colleges will prepare you for a career in the food service industry. A Certificate of Completion in Culinary Arts will get you started as a fry cook or cook’s helper in a restaurant or dining facility. An associate’s degree in Food Service with specialization in patisserie will prepare you to become a professional baker and pastry chef. And, of course, the AS degree in Culinary Arts will prepare you to either enter the workforce as a professional chef or transfer to a four-year university. Upon successful completion of the AS degree, you will be eligible for certification by the American Culinary Association.

Food Service - Dining Room Service, Restaurant Supervision
Job openings are expected to be abundant in the food and beverage service industry. If you’re seeking a short-term training option that prepares you quickly for employment, then consider the Dining Room Service Certificate of Completion program, a one-semester program of study or the Associate in Applied Science degree in Restaurant Supervision. These programs will prepare you to work in hotel dining rooms, banquet facilities, restaurants and coffee shops as a service provider or supervisor.

Hawaiian Culture or Hawaiian Studies
The certificate program in Hawaiian Culture or Hawaiian Studies is designed for students wishing to gain a basic background in Hawaiian culture for their educational and employment careers. Courses include Hawaiian language, culture, environment and values. The certificate satisfies basic course requirements for the Hawaiian Studies and Hawaiian Language bachelor degree programs at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and at Hilo.

Hawaiian Life Styles
Do you want to develop a deep and relevant expertise in Hawaiian culture? Then, the Hawaiian Life Styles program can help you develop your understanding of the Native Hawaiian culture and traditions. Learn about particular native Hawaiian occupations that supported a vibrant, sustainable, highly scientific, and spiritually balanced island population years prior to Western contact. The curriculum provides a foundation upon which students may continue toward a baccalaureate degree in Hawaiian Studies or Hawaiian Language at four-year universities. The program’s objective is to improve graduates’ employment and business opportunities that require a skilled-level of knowledge of Hawaiian culture.

Human Services
If you like to help people, young and old, then the Human Services program might be of interest to you. The program helps prepare you for a variety of occupations, which involve working with children or adults. It is built around a core of courses that provide skills and knowledge needed by human service workers employed as education assistants, social service aides, health aides, and other community service-related jobs.

Human Services - Community Service
This program will prepare you for work as a human service worker in diverse settings such as group homes, mental retardation and community mental health centers; family, child and youth service agencies; and programs concerned with alcoholism, drug abuse, family violence and aging.

Occupational and Environmental Safety Management
Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health is one of the fastest growing fields in the country. This two-year program is designed to provide practical training in occupational and environmental safety and health. Graduates from the program are qualified to work in careers such as occupational safety and health inspectors, safety officers, and environmental technicians in governmental agencies, environmental consulting firms, construction companies, insurance companies, and other types of private industries.

Paralegal is a growing field. A paralegal is a person who assists in the delivery of legal services by performing the technical and paraprofessional aspects of maintaining any law practice. The paralegal is someone specially trained to perform, under the supervision of an attorney, legal functions traditionally undertaken by either an attorney or an expert legal secretary.

The Academic Subject Certificate in Philippine Studies is designed to provide you with a strong introduction to the culture, language, and history of the Philippines and the Filipino people. It provides a valuable foundation for students planning to earn a bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies.

Psycho-Social Developmental Studies
This Academic Subject Certificate provides pre-professional training for students planning careers in counseling, education, social work, psychology and other human services fields. The curriculum combines existing liberal arts courses and cooperative education at designated field sites in partnership with a social service agency or hospital.

Substance Abuse Counseling

The program is also helpful for those already working in the field and who wish to hone their skills and knowledge and for those working in law enforcement, nursing, education, rehabilitation counseling, and other areas of human services. The program prepares you to take the state certification exam.
