U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) Assistant Regional Attorney Nakkisa Akhavan and Hawai‘i Civil Rights Commission (“HCRC”) Chief Counsel Constance Yonashiro will discuss reasonable accommodations relating to pregnancy and domestic violence under Federal and State law, including the new Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (effective June 27, 2023) and the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act (effective December 29, 2022). They will also share practical tips about complying with legal requirements in these areas and creating an inclusive work environment.

Constance Yonashiro, Chief Counsel for the HCRC

For over a decade, Connie has served in various roles within the HCRC, including as an investigator handling cases involving discrimination in employment and public accommodations, and eight years as an enforcement attorney representing the Executive Director in conciliation and litigation. She recently moved from enforcement to adjudications and now serves as an advisor to the Commissioners as chief counsel. She graduated from William S. Richardson School of Law with a certificate in Environmental Law in 2013.

Nakkisa Akhavan, Assistant Regional Attorney for the EEOC Los Angeles District Office

Nakkisa Akhavan is an Assistant Regional Attorney in the Los Angeles District Office Legal Unit (OGC) of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The Los Angeles District encompasses Southern and Central California, Southern Nevada, the state of Hawaii, and the U.S. territories of Guam, American Samoa, Wake Islands and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands. Prior to joining the EEOC in 2014, she worked at two private law firms in Los Angeles, representing employees in employment discrimination and wage and hour lawsuits in state and federal court. Nakkisa received her JD from UCLA School of Law and a BA in Political Science from UC Berkeley. She is admitted to practice in California.
