Free UHCC summer classes for the High School Class of 2020

This summer, the University of Hawai‘i invited the graduating class from all Hawai‘i’s public high schools to enroll in free college courses through the Next Steps: Career Exploration program. More than 1,500 graduates from the Department of Education class of 2020 enrolled in 129 different courses earning between 1-6 college credits over the summer.

In the Career Exploration classes, high school graduates are exploring their career options and discovering the education and training needed to reach their goals. Meet the instructors of Career Exploration classes.

Next Step students are eligible to apply for the Stronger Together Hawai‘i Scholarship. A new $2 million scholarship funded by the Hawai‘i Community Foundation and First Hawaiian Bank. This scholarship is specifically for students who participate in the Next Steps to Your Future initiative. Applications opened on July 15 and will close on August 5, 4pm HST.

Learn about career paths in Hawai‘i

On July 27 and 28, nine University of Hawai‘i campuses will be featuring 53 programs in a virtual program fair. This online fair is a great opportunity to learn more about the amazing and affordable programs offered throughout the University of Hawai‘i System. Over 80 presenters will be featuring programs across seven categories. The fair will feature presentations in Public and Human Services, Industrial Engineering Technology, Business, Health, Natural Resources, Arts and Communication, and Student Support. If you're not able to attend, presentations will be recorded and posted on the site after the event. This virtual fair will be on July 27 and 28, 2020 with sessions running from 9:00-10:00am 10:30-11:30am, and 1:00-2:00pm on both days.

Can I still sign up for a Next Step class?
Sign up for Next Step and for classes has ended. More than 1,500 students signed up for the 129 classes offered this summer.

How do I apply for the $2 million of scholarships for Next Step students?
Participating students will have the opportunity to apply for the Stronger Together Hawai‘i Scholarship. The Hawai‘i Community Foundation (HCF).
HCF and First Hawaiian Bank have generously funded this new $2 million scholarship for students who participate in the Next Steps to Your Future initiative. Applications will be available on July 8 and must be submitted by July 31.

Is the class really free?
Generous sponsors of the Next Step: Career Exploration classes are: Harold K.L. Castle Foundation, Clarence T. C. Ching Foundation, Hawai'i Community Foundation, Strada Education Network, and Stupski Foundation. Sponsors believe in the Class of 2020 and support their future plans.

Why should students do this?
The Next Step: Career Exploration classes are free! You will focus on your goals, explore your career options, plan your future steps, and develop skills to be successful in your future. It's an opportunity to experience an online college course, and meet other Class of 2020 grads.

Do these classes "count"?
Next Step: Career Exploration classes are UH Community College classes for credit. Participating students may earn between 1-6 college credits, which can usually be used to meet elective requirements for a degree. Grades for these classes will be included in students’ UH transcripts and calculated as part of students’ grade point averages.
