Logistics for the day

Here's how you can make the most of the event:

  • Come early. Our morning schedule is below:
    • 7:45 a.m. Continental breakfast, registration check-in, and networking
    • 9:00 a.m. Opening protocol
  • Attend our sessions. More than 150 of your colleagues are conducting 75 presentations on best practices and their experiences. Attend presentations that will benefit you in the work that you do.
  • Network with colleagues. This may be your only time to meet with your colleagues from across the system this year, so use the networking morning and lunch time wisely.
  • Plan out your schedule ahead of time. We will be using the Whova app (see below) for the conference along with our HISSI website. A brief printed program will be given to you when you check in, and you can view the linked program here ahead of time and see what presentations interest you beforehand.

Other things you need to know:

  • Whova App: This year we are using the Whova application. You will receive an email from Whova on Tuesday (February 27). Follow the instructions to download Whova to your mobile device. The HISSI program, presenter bios, social media engagement and additional information will be available in the app.
  • Parking: Park in the conference center parking structure and take the elevator directly to the Kalākaua Ballroom on level 4 for registration. Be sure to get your parking ticket validated at the registration table when you check in. HISSI will cover the cost of validated self parking. Without validation, you will pay $45 for the day or $15 for validated valet parking.
  • WIFI Service: Limited WIFI service is available. See the convention center map for select areas with complimentary WIFI areas.
  • The opening session, registration and lunch program will be held in the Kalākaua Ballroom on level 4. Breakout session presentations will be held in the meeting rooms on level 3. See the convention center map.
  • Nursing moms can find a Mom Pod on level 1 of the convention center. Please see the presenters' registration table for the code. We have also reserved one room each breakout session to ensure there is space available for you.

Expect 2024 HISSI to be a long, but fulfilling day, especially if you are traveling from afar. Rest up the night before and know that your commitment to the UH Community Colleges and our students' success is greatly appreciated and acknowledged.

Lastly, we all know Honolulu's Friday afternoon pau hana (after work) traffic can be really bad especially from Waikīkī. In past years, many of you left early to avoid it but missed out on the last presentation sessions and/or afternoon general assembly. We would like to encourage you to be engaged until the end when the final door prizes will be handed out. This is your HISSI! Let's get the most out of it!

The Hawaiʻi Student Success Institute is an annual convening of the faculty and staff from the UH Community Colleges. Started as a systemwide Excellence in Education conference, the professional development day was institutionalized as a non-instructional day on the first Friday in March each year. The purpose of this day is to encourage sharing of best practices in teaching, learning, student support, and other support services across the 7 UH community colleges.
