Momentum 2022 FAQ's

Eligibility/Application

  • Who is eligible for this program?
    • This program is for the Class of 2022 Hawai‘i high school graduates who have taken college courses in high school from the University of Hawai‘i and that intend to enroll at a UH campus for the Fall 2022 semester.
  • What type of free course is being offered?
    • We are offering general education type courses that are transferable to any UH campus. Each eligible student may take one (1) free college course that is on our list of specific eligible courses. Textbooks and course materials are included, students do not pay for anything! Any course outside of our list of courses will not be free.
  • Which campus should I select on the Momentum application?
    • Students should select the campus in which they intend to enroll for the Fall semester. If a student intends to enroll at UH Mānoa, UH Hilo, or UH West Oahu, in the Fall, they should select the community college campus that is closest to the student for the summer course.
  • If a student is accepted to UH Mānoa, UH Hilo, or UH West Oahu, can the student participate in the Momentum program and take a free UHCC course?
    • Yes, as long as the student intends to enroll at any UH campus in the Fall 2022 semester. To participate in the program, the student will be enrolled as a UH Community College student in the Summer term. The Fall term will not be affected.
  • Are there any options for students with disabilities/special education students?
    • All students are eligible for any of our courses. Each campus has a disabilities office to support students.

  • If I sign up for a class and end up dropping the class, will it affect my GPA?
    • If you drop a class, it will NOT affect your GPA. However, depending on when you drop the class, you may receive a W (still doesn't affect GPA) but a W will stay on the transcript for the campus in which the course is taken.
  • Does this class “count” for my degree?
    • The Momentum program will offer general education type courses that will transfer to any UH campus, with the exception of Math 50. Grades for these classes will be included in your UH transcripts and calculated as part of your grade point averages.

Course Information

  • Can I take other classes in the summer along with this free course?
    • Yes, you can take other courses on top of our free Momentum course. However, you are responsible for payment for any other courses beyond Momentum’s specific courses. In addition, you should look at how much you are putting on your plate if you take more than one summer course at a time.
  • Can I choose any course that I want?
    • You will not be able to select any course. We have a specific section of general education courses that you can choose from. Once you submit your application, you will receive an email with recommended courses to select. Momentum courses will be offered online fully asynchronous (there are no specific times to log in, independent learning).
  • When is the free class?
    • Second summer session: July 5, 2022 - August 12, 2022
  • What is the time commitment for the course?
    • Like any college course, you will need to manage your time wisely. Since summer courses are shorter in length, only 6 weeks, this means you’ll need to study more throughout each week. For summer courses, you should plan to spend about 16-24 hours a week, this includes class, study, and homework time.
  • Will I be taking the courses at the campus I’m going to in the Fall?
    • You may not necessarily take the course at the campus you’re going to in the Fall. We offer a variety of courses at various community college campuses. If you take a course offered by another campus, you may need to complete a “Transfer credit evaluation request” form to have the course transferred, but that can be done later in the Fall semester.
  • I already chose a course, am I able to switch?
    • If there is space available in the course, yes. To switch classes, please email us at gouhcc@hawaii.edu no later than June 10, 2022.

Technology Needs

  • I don’t have a laptop, can I take the class using my smartphone?
    • It is recommended that you use a computer or laptop for your online college courses. If you would like to borrow a laptop, please email us at gouhcc@hawaii.edu.
