Movie Club: Rothaniel

As a head start to Kapʻolani Community College's PAU Violence SAAM activities, we will be watching Jerrod Carmichael's acclaimed stand up special "Rothaniel". Carmichael explores secrets and the toll they take on an individual and a family. In a deeply personal work, Carmichael shares his secrets ranging from his father's infidelity to his own experiences as a man coming out to a family that loves him "in spite of" his sexual orientation. Students and employees are welcome to watch the performance and then discuss it as a group. Viewers should be aware that there is graphic and derogatory language. Sex Assault Awareness Month Fair @ UH Mānoa Campus Center Courtyard

Please join the UH Mānoa Title IX office, Confidential Mānoa Advocate, PAU Violence program, and several other on-campus and off-campus resources for the Sex Assault Awareness Month Fair at the UH Mānoa Campus Center Courtyard. The theme of the fair is consistent with the national SAAM theme, "Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity,” which focuses on individuals, organizations, institutions, and communities working together to make positive changes and building racial equity.

Movie Club: Nanette

For Kapiʻolani Community College’s PAU Violence second Movie Club, we will be watching Hannah Gadsby's groundbreaking show "Nanette". In this performance, Gadsby wrestles with issues from homophobia, misogyny, who determines what art is, the nature of comedy and the fundamental importance of telling your own story. Comedian Tig Nataro said it should be "required viewing if you are a human being." KapCC PAU invites all human beings, be they students or employees, to watch this show and discuss it afterwards. Viewers should be aware that difficult subject matter will be addressed, including violence and sexual assault. Email devon@hawaii.edu for more information.

Ohi'a Cafeteria, Kapiʻolani Community College

Thanks to a SEED grant, KapCC's PAU Coalition is pleased to announce the long anticipated in person performance Expect [respect]. This program is a 45 minute theatrical performance and discussion about sexual violence prevention created for students. The play is made up of short vignettes that focus on the importance of respecting boundaries and empowering students to create a safe community through informed action. The program is an outreach program co-created by the Sex Abuse Treatment Center (SATC), Alliance for Drama Education (ADE), T-Shirt Theatre and Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY). The program focuses on developing social-emotional competencies such as, responsible decision making, relationship management, and social awareness through social modeling and group discussion. Some of the skills and behaviors taught throughout the program include: how to make decisions based on moral standards, how to communicate effectively, identify resources for help when needed, provide help to those who need it, advocate for oneself, and evaluate others’ emotional reactions. Let’s Get REAL Workshop

April 21st, 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Participants who attend this training will learn to:

  • Recognize the continuum of behaviors contributing to sexual and relationship violence
  • Empower themselves to develop the skills to be active bystanders
  • Act to intervene safely
  • Lead collectively toward a community that reflects a commitment to the safety of all its members against gender-based violence

Register for this system-wide workshop, which will take place via Zoom.
