Academic Affairs
The Academic Affairs office works with the academic affairs leaders on each campus to develop and maintain policies and processes to ensure a positive and responsive student experience and support student success. The office is also responsible for ensuring statewide access to our academic programs through a variety of instructional delivery modalities.
Corequisite Initiative
The University of Hawaiʻi Community Colleges (UHCC) are committed to providing access to higher education to all Hawaiʻi residents. Nationally, and in the state of Hawaiʻi, many students come to the community colleges underprepared for college-level courses. To address this issue and ensure student progress towards a certificate or degree, the UHCC implemented the Co-requisite Initiative in 2015. Through collaboration with the seven community colleges, math and English faculty developed new models for delivering college-level math and English using a variety of approaches that provided additional student support. The revised curricula utilize either an accelerated approach and/or co-requisite model so students can complete college-level math and English during the first year of college.
Credit for Prior Learning
Credit for prior learning, or CPL, is a term for various methods that can be used to evaluate learning that has occurred outside of the traditional academic environment. It's also sometimes called prior learning assessment (PLA). It is used to grant college credit, certification, or advanced standing toward further education or training.
Perkins V
The Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V) was signed into law on July 31, 2018. The law reauthorizes and updates the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 to ensure career and technical education (CTE) programs meet the demands of the twenty-first-century economy. Perkins V represents an important opportunity to expand opportunities for every student to explore, choose, and follow career and technical education programs of study and career pathways to earn credentials of value.
